Dancers benefit from learning about major joints such as the hips, knees, ankles, shoulders, and spine. They should also understand the basic roles of muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, and joint capsules.
Muscles create and control movement by producing force. Tendons connect muscles to bones, while ligaments help connect and stabilise bones around joints.
Proprioception allows dancers to sense where their bodies are positioned without constantly looking in a mirror. The International Association for Dance Medicine & Science describes proprioception as an essential part of refined, expressive movement.

Study anatomy alongside a qualified teacher whenever possible. Experiential learning-moving while thinking about a joint, muscle group, or alignment principle—is usually more memorable than reading terminology alone.
Avoid using anatomy to criticise your body. The purpose is not to find “flaws.” It is to understand your structure, strengthen what needs support, and use your available movement range intelligently.
